Salt Spray Test
A Salt Spray Test is a standardized corrosion resistance evaluation that exposes materials to a continuous saline mist under controlled laboratory conditions. This accelerated testing method simulates years of marine or industrial corrosive exposure, allowing engineers to predict the long-term durability of gabion materials before field deployment.
How the Test Works
The test uses a specialized chamber where a 5% sodium chloride solution is atomized at 35°C. Specimens are positioned at specific angles and exposed to the salt fog for predetermined periods—ranging from 96 hours for basic screening to 1,000+ hours for marine-grade certification. The process follows international standards including ASTM B117, ISO 9227, and GB/T 10125.
Results are evaluated by measuring the time until first corrosion appears, the extent of rust coverage, and whether protective coatings remain intact. For gabion applications facing coastal spray, de-icing salts, or industrial atmospheres, these results directly indicate real-world service life.
Performance Comparison by Material
| Material Type | Hours to Corrosion | Marine Suitability |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanized Steel Gabion | 200-500 hours | Limited (5-10 years) |
| PVC-Coated Wire Gabion | 800-1,200 hours | Moderate (15-25 years) |
| PET Gabion Mesh | 5,000+ hours (no corrosion) | Excellent (50+ years) |
Traditional metal gabions show progressive deterioration as zinc coatings deplete or PVC layers crack. PET gabion mesh, being polymer-based, contains no reactive metals and demonstrates zero corrosion even after extended testing.
When Salt Spray Testing Matters Most
Marine Construction Projects
Seawalls, breakwaters, and coastal erosion control structures require materials proven to withstand continuous salt exposure without structural degradation.
Winter Climate Infrastructure
Highway retaining walls and roadside barriers in northern regions face heavy de-icing salt application that accelerates metal corrosion by 3-5 times normal rates.
Industrial Facilities
Chemical plants, wastewater treatment sites, and port facilities demand gabion systems that maintain integrity despite aggressive atmospheric conditions.
Conclusion
Salt spray test results provide objective data for selecting gabion materials that will perform reliably in corrosive environments. Shengsen’s gabion products are rigorously salt spray tested to ensure long-term durability. View our products here.
