Gabion Glossary

Here you can find important gabion basket terms and definitions, explained in a simple and clear way. Our goal is to enlighten you on important topics from all areas of gabion construction, landscaping, and civil engineering applications.

A

ASTM A975

The primary standard specification for double-twisted hexagonal mesh gabions and revet mattresses. It governs material quality (metallic and PVC coatings), wire tensile strength, mesh geometry, and structural performance requirements to ensure long-term stability in erosion control and civil applications.

B

Bulging

The outward deformation of a gabion face caused by internal stone pressure. This installation defect is prevented by specifying high-tensile mesh and strictly enforcing internal bracing (connecting wire) requirements during filling.

L

Lacing Wire

The wire used to assemble and interconnect adjacent gabion units. Essential for creating a monolithic structure, lacing wire must match the mesh coating quality to ensure consistent durability at all connections.

P

PET Gabion Mesh

PET Gabion Mesh is a hexagonal woven structure fabricated from high-strength polyester monofilaments, offering a corrosion-free alternative to traditional steel wire solutions.

PVC Coated Gabion

Wire mesh basket with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polymer coating over galvanized core wire, providing enhanced corrosion resistance and extended service life in chemically aggressive or high-chloride environments.

S

Salt Spray Test

Laboratory corrosion test exposing materials to saline mist. Measures hours-to-corrosion to predict gabion performance in marine and salt-exposed environments.

Selvedge Wire

A heavier-gauge terminal wire bordering double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh sheets. It reinforces the panel perimeter, facilitates load transfer during lacing, and prevents unraveling.

T

Tensile Strength

Tensile strength is the maximum longitudinal force a wire or mesh can withstand before failure, typically measured in kN/m for gabion applications and specified.
